Life Cycle Value Assessments (LCVAs) and LCVA Training
Triple-bottom-line Analysis from Start to Finish
Life Cycle Value Assessments (LCVAs)
With experience spanning more than a decade and across multiple sectors, Pembina Corporate Consulting has developed Life Cycle Value Assessments — a unique, practical and multidisciplinary systems-analysis methodology for business decisions and design. LCVA uses a flexible approach to analyze projects, products or services; it ensures that the environmental, economic and social issues, risks and opportunities are systematically considered throughout the life cycle of the project, and at the same time streamlines the decision-making process. The application of LCVA can facilitate decision-making, reduce costs and environmental impacts, and increase socio-economic benefits through sustainable design.
"The LCVA process and report provided BP and its partners with a useful tool to analyze our waste management options."
Cynthia Pyc, Senior Project Manager, BP
LCVA Methodology
The diagram below briefly outlines the LCVA methodology to ensure that triple-bottom-line (economic, social and environmental aspects) and systems thinking are integrated into decisions, design, and construction and operational practices.

Is LCVA Appropriate for Your Decisions?
As a tool to embrace the concept of sustainability and put it into practice, LCVA can be applied by businesses, policy developers, communities and individuals. LCVA is typically used to support internal or multi-stakeholder decisions such as the selection of products or technologies, process decisions and the selection of routes or locations. However, an LCVA approach can also be used for the high-level assessment of a project's feasibility; the triple-bottom-line evaluation of a project; a stakeholder-engagement strategy; the optimization of processes; applications for approvals; and the identification of risks. There are opportunities to apply LCVA through all stages of the capital-value process, but it is most commonly applied during the scoping or design-based memorandum stages (FEL 1 or 2).
Fully embraced by many leading North American companies, LCVA has evolved into a premier tool for decision-making and design improvement at all stages of project development and operation. Many companies have engaged Pembina Corporate Consulting in order to seamlessly integrate LCVA (life-cycle, triple-bottom-line thinking) into their existing project-delivery systems. Pembina Corporate Consulting has also conducted numerous LCVAs for the oil sands, oil and gas, electricity generation, and renewable energy sectors. LCVA clients include Suncor, Petro-Canada, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Manitoba Hydro and CH2M HILL, among others.
LCVA Training
Pembina Corporate Consulting also offers customized training for all levels of employees, in order to build an internal capacity in the concepts of LCVA and its application. In addition to hands-on training in its application, our training sessions build an increased awareness and understanding of sustainability concepts and tools, the global context for sustainability, the sustainability business case, and stakeholder consultation and engagement.
"Application of LCVA served as a powerful tool to rank multiple options and facilitate sustainable development dialogue among industry proponents."
Project Manager, Suncor
We can work with your team to integrate LCVA into existing decision-making processes within your organization, or apply LCVA directly to decisions. Using professional techniques and exercises, Pembina can help facilitate group decision-making. Pembina also provides do-it-yourself LCVA tools so that you can independently perform LCVA concepts on a continuing basis.
