OneLessTonne
A fun employee-engagement program that promotes energy savings.

"We invited employees to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne. Indeed they did better than that. Imagine what could be achieved if 10 million Canadians did the same."

Dr. J. Ashley Nixon, Shell Canada

OneLessTonne offers a suite of customized tools and services for initiating an employee-engagement program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Originally conceived several years ago in partnership with Natural Resources Canada and the One Tonne Challenge, OneLessTonne was redesigned in 2008 to reflect current data.

How do I set up a OneLessTonne initiative for my company?

The Pembina Institute will arrange everything you need to get OneLessTonne up and running on your intranet site. There, employees choose from about 20 actions that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions at home and on the road. OneLessTonne calculates the potential energy savings from each action they select, and presents employees with their personal Action Plans.

Our package has five helpful components:

  • The set-up and maintenance of OneLessTonne;
  • Up to a day of kick-off presentations and workshops for your target employee audiences to help you maximize participation;
  • A handbook featuring OneLessTonne's secrets of success;
  • A CD-ROM with promotional OneLessTonne material customized for your organization;
  • Follow-up monitoring and reporting on employee participation rates and greenhouse gas reduction totals.

What Advisory Services are included?

The Pembina Institute will also provide advice to help enhance the success of OneLessTonne with your employees. With your company's initiative team, we will take key actions:

  • Develop your OneLessTonne goals and identify barriers to those goals so that they can be minimized prior to the launch of the initiative;
  • Communicate the successes of your OneLessTonne initiative to your stakeholders;
  • Interpret lessons learned from your OneLessTonne initiative to aid you in future endeavours.

What about incentives and give-aways?

Incentives to buy energy-efficient household products and give-aways such as energy-efficient light bulbs and digital tire-pressure gauges can help you jump-start your OneLessTonne initiative. The Pembina Institute can help your company select the best incentives for your employees.

What are the benefits to my company?

  • Research shows that Canadians care about climate change. A OneLessTonne initiative demonstrates to employees that their company's values are in line with their own, leading to greater commitment, higher employee retention and higher productivity;
  • A OneLessTonne initiative is a sign of a company's commitment to environmental responsibility, benefiting your reputation and public relations;
  • Engaging employees in fun, interactive group events reduces stress and is good for company culture;
  • Once employees become more energy-conscious at home, chances are that they will adopt similar thinking at work, potentially leading to energy cost-savings for your company.
